Pricing AI-assisted social work: value, not hours

A strategist in r/copywriting made an argument worth sitting with: what looks like an AI problem in freelance writing is really a pricing-model problem that predates the models. Per-word and per-post pricing always assumed production was the scarce thing. AI ended that assumption — drafts are now nearly free, so anyone priced as a draft-producer is competing with nearly-free.

Stop selling the part that got cheap

If your retainer reads "12 posts a month", you've priced yourself as the thing that collapsed. The parts of the work that did not get cheap are conspicuous: knowing what to say (strategy, and listening to what the client's audience is actually talking about), deciding what ships (editing and approval), proving it worked (reporting against real benchmarks), and being accountable when it doesn't. Price those. The posts become the delivery mechanism, not the product.

The same week, a thread about a small agency's stack did the maths on per-seat pricing: roughly $400 a month across scheduling and content tools, climbing with every client added. Per-seat and per-client pricing quietly taxes growth — your costs scale linearly with exactly the thing you're trying to grow. Two honest questions from clients

"You're using AI — shouldn't this cost less?" Some of the efficiency should reach the client; that's what makes the model sellable. But the discount comes off production, not off judgement — you're charging for the layer that keeps near-free drafts from becoming near-worthless posts.

"Then what am I paying for?" The answer should already be in your proposal: strategy, taste, the approval gate, the report, the accountability. If the honest answer is "volume", the market has already repriced you — the thread just hasn't reached you yet.
