The fact-checking tax: why AI drafts still need an editor

A small agency owner set off a long thread recently with an uncomfortable observation: models "casually make up statistics, quote fake reports from huge brands, and invent URLs", and fact-checking the output now takes longer than writing from scratch would have. A hundred-plus comments agreed. The maths of AI content had quietly gone negative for them.

The failure modes are specific

It helps to name them, because they are checkable: invented statistics with confident precision; citations to reports that don't exist; plausible-looking URLs that 404; and real facts assembled into claims nobody made. Generic prompts produce exactly this, because the model is filling a vacuum where your actual inputs should be.

Shrink the surface before you check it

The despair in that thread comes from treating review as an afterthought bolted onto generation. Reverse it. First, ground the draft: generation that starts from real inputs — a social listening brief, the client's own numbers, an approved fact sheet — has far less room to hallucinate. In Brandaris, drafts are briefed by the day's listening data and the client's Brand DNA, not conjured from a one-line prompt.

Second, make the check structured rather than a vague read-through:

  • Every number needs a source the checker can open.
  • Every named brand, person or report gets verified or cut.
  • Every URL gets clicked.
  • Voice and claims get read against the brand facts, not memory.

Where AI still genuinely saves time

None of this means the tools are a mirage. Drafting variants, adapting one idea across platforms, resizing, rewriting for tone — the production layer is genuinely faster, and agencies report batch production dropping from days to hours. The saving is real when the checking is cheap, and the checking is cheap when the inputs were real to begin with.

The honest equation: grounded generation plus a structured human gate beats both "write everything by hand" and "publish what the model said". Nothing should ship without a person signing it off — and the person should be signing off something that was checkable by design.

Your brand, impossible to scroll past.

Brandaris is the AI social studio agencies run on — listening, creation, human approval, publishing and analytics in one workflow. Nothing ships without a human yes.
